Welcome to FLES!
(Foreign Language as an Elementary Student)
The FLES school year is divided into semesters and is given once a week. During the first semester, students learn French language and culture. During the second semester, students learn Hispanic culture and Spanish language. Despite the semester set-up (Spanish starts in early February), students will receive a trimester report card wth the rest of the 6th grade. Because both the Spanish and French languages are “Romance Languages” they are very similar. Therefore, both languages strengthen them regardless of the language they choose for 7th Grade. We have seen a positive impact in the achievement of our 7th grade students because of this program.
Important Note: Sometime in late January and mid-February, the guidance counselor from the Jr. Sr. High School helps set up students’ 7th grade schedules. They will be asked which language they would like to take in the Jr. Sr. High School. If you want to be involved with that decision, please have a conversation with your child by that time. If not, they will freely choose whichever language they would like to take.
Lessons and Homework
Whether classwork or homework, all course content is delineated in Teams each week. Please feel free to download the app onto your phone or home computer. Using the sign-in information of your child, you can follow the course and its assignements. The notebook and binder is electronic. Students have their material in this platform as a way to introduce them to this technology and be ready for 7th grade, but also because it’s incredibly convenient. No worksheet every gets lost.
Grading
Grades are based on classwork, homework, notebook checks and a Trimester Project.
